Ross Poldark: Book 1 (Poldark Saga)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Pan Books Ltd (May, 2003)
Average review score:

Winston Graham Has DiedHe passed away on July 10. If you haven't read the Poldark series, and care anything for cornwall, the 18th century, historical romance in its truest form, historical fiction, or just a darn good story that will change your life, then you should buy this book. Ross Poldark, the initially impoverished aristocrat, is a hero men can admire and women can fall in love with. These people will be more real to you than folks you talk to every day....
SUPERBThis whole series is superb. Fine historical fiction--fine fiction, period. Wonderful characters, evocative sense of place and time. I am so pleased to se that they have been re-published and will find a new audience. Read them all, in order, soon.
Poverty and PrivelegeI just finished reading this book. I have read several others in this series and highly recommend them. I think this and the other Poldark books are some of the best historical novels I have read in years.!! Winston Graham writes so well of life in 1780's Cornwall.
Ross Poldark, our hero, has just returend to his family home after 2 years fighting in the Revolutionary war, and is hoping for a reunion with the woman he loves. The author describes every detail of life as if he had lived in those times. One becomes very involved with the characters.
One constant theme in this book is the contrast between the desperately poor common people and the gentry. Ross Poldark is a gentleman who is unusual for his concern with the wellbeing of the "lower classes."
You probably won't want to stop with just this book. I'm very glad to hear that these are finally being reprinted in the U.S.

A superb and greatly appreciated giftbook choiceStockcarToons: Grins And Spins On The Winston Cup Circuit is a wry, lighthearted, and chuckle-inducing collection of cartoons drawn and captioned by Mike Smith about the good, the bad, and the ugly of car racing on the Winston Cup Circuit. The simply executed black-and-white 'toons completely capture the emotion and essence of the ironies in the sport, and how recent events such as a ban on cigarette advertising have affected it. StockcarToons would make a superb and greatly appreciated giftbook choice for any dedicated auto racing fan.
GREAT NASCAR HUMOR!!!This book is a MUST HAVE for any NASCAR fan. It is hilarious! Mike Smith has a great sense of humor. Don't believe me? Check out his most recent "stockcartoons"...
You'll really like this book if you are an Anti-Jeff Gordon fan....although Mike Smith is nice to Gordon a few times.

McDonald blows 'em all awayThis second edition of VOM was terrific. A wonderful selection of many Michigander talents. I was especially impressed by "Pie," a truly inspiring poem by Molly McDonald. She's one to look out for in the future. Three apples are enough for me!
FINALIST FOR THE 2000 GREAT LAKES BOOK AWARD!The poetry in this edition is especially strong this year, butdon't miss the short stories! The next Voices of Michigan mightpossibly be a children's volume...
Like a sunny day on Mackinac IslandI am honored to be one of the authors in this volume, and so had planned to purchase it anyway, but I have been exceptionally pleased with the quality of the book and its contents. It is beautifully made with a stunning variety of fiction, nonfiction and poetry by writers with ties to Michigan. Many of the writings speak of Michigan and bring back wonderful memories. Others display the writing talent from all over the state. Thanks Jane and all for putting this together!

Art Crime: The Montage Art of Winston Smith
Published in Paperback by Last Gasp of San Francisco (April, 1999)
Average review score:

98 pages and worth every pennyWinston Smith takes retro drawings and paintings from thee original picture, and turns them into collages. Thee collages are intended to inform and amuse you. In thee opinion of me, Winston does with pictures what people like William S. Burroughs and Jello Biafra have done with words. Most of these pictures are very funny and very thought provoking. This book also makes for a great conversational piece for your coffee table or whatever. Also included are album covers he has done for Dead Kennedys, Green Day, Tijuana No! etc.. There is a four page pull-out of the banner for Tijuana No! and a two page pull-out for the cover to Dead Kennedys' album Bedtime for Democracy which you can find in thee music section of this site. I reccomend this book not only for punk rockers but for free thinkers of all shapes and sizes. There is so much to look at in one picture you can read this one again and again.
Punk is an art and Winston displays it as it is.Punk is an art and Winston displays it as it is
A delicious book for anyone who loves Winston!!!Winston's work to me is so amazingly awesome that I can not define how great the book is. Check it out for yourself and you will understand

"what might be the only type of book on my fav director."Terence Fisher,--what more can i say or comment on who to me is my all-time favorite director of film (thus, most notably the horror field) Terence Fisher not only gave birth to the modern horror film (The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), but his work enfluenced generations to come,(people who we know today, martin Scorseasee, Stevein speilberg ext,) with his masterful works of art. With supream reigning masterpeices such as his 3 best(my opinion) Frankenstein must be Destroyed (1969), wich is a technical masterpeice, not have i seen a film that clicks so well, in it's flawless compostion, and pacing, and story narritive, it's whole cynical veiw of the world,. This with out doubt is Fisher's most cynical piece. The Devil Rides out (1968), is another prime example as being fisher at his very best, exploring human realationships, and his facination for the romantism that he has brought to most his best and personal works. And finnaly The Horror of Dracula (1958), often considered Hammer's crown jewl of horror. This perfectly captures the essence of the stoker novel, and his take on victorian society is superaltive, and not to mention the execution in every scene and shot is absolultely flawless (possiably D.P. Jack Asher's best work). So if u have a great admiration for Terence fisher and his films this is the book to get, trust me, even if u know quit a bit, there is with out a doubt that u will indeed learn more about One of the greatest British-film directors who ever made their mark on the silver screen. Dixon's Book Pays Tribute to a Great DirectorIt's sad to think that there's only one book in English that deals with the life and work of Terence Fisher. Working within a limited form and exploitation industry, the best of Fisher's films transend craft. There is poetry in the economic way this director manipulates the conventions we take for granted in Horror Movies. Mr. Dixon's book takes Fisher's sense of craft and style seriously. He shows us that Fisher became one of the major artist working in the British film industry. Other well known directors became famous directing big budget projects. But what would a David Lean do if he had to work with the tight budgets, short shooting schedules, and often on the same sets from film to film the way Terence Fisher had to work? One of the most remarkable things about Fisher is that he took what others would consider limitations and created enduring works of art; visually stunning, compelling and poetic works of art. Dixon's book validates this fact. I learned a great deal from it and enjoyed the insider's view it communicates. Thank-you, Mr. Dixon.

Churchill's History of the English-Speaking Peoples
Published in Hardcover by Greenwich House (October, 1987)
Average review score:

Churchill- Between Fighting Wars He Was A Hell Of A WriterChurchill's 'History of the English Speaking People's' is presented as all history should be presented- with a keen understanding of the events as they unfolded, an amazing ability to convey the motivations and passions of the people involved, and with a profound wit. Churchill effortlessly tells us the story of England from it's earliest settlement to the eve of World War I. His insights into such events as the Boer War, the Conflicts with Napoleon, and the American Civil War are unparrelled. If you want to learn more of how the Anglo-American world came to be this four volume set is more than worth a look.
A NICE COMPREHENSIVE HISTORY OF ENGLISH SPEAKING PEOPLEI am not of Angle Saxon but rather of Slavic descent, but this is a truly interesting set of books that will keep your attention no matter your ancestral heritage. There are 3 significant observations I've made while reading the set of books: 1) his description of the English kings and queens is easy to follow and his characters are alive (except for the constant stream of nobility getting their heads cut off), not boring; 2) he also devotes a lot of the story to America, more than the other "colonies," and 3) his history of Britain during the time of the American Revolution is very skimpy, biased, and does not deal with the real issues America faced. The book is very poor in dealing with the American Revolution, but overall the book is essential and easy reading for the consumate history reader.
Who better to know the subject?Exhaustive, pithy, insightful, illuminating and in places funny as hell; it is rare to say of a four-volume work, "I couldn't put it down", but of Churchill's work I say it truthfully.

Empowering Adolescent Girls: Examining the Present and Building Skills for the Future with the "Go Girls" Program
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (15 May, 2001)
Average review score:

A Timely and Necessary Book!Empowering Adolescent Girls is a "must-read" for anyone who has an adolescent girl, knows one, teaches one, counsels one, works with one, is one, or is in any way curious about what makes them tick and how to more successfully communicate with them. This is an intelligent, articulate, compassionate, and realistic approach to a very difficult and important social phenomenon. Daley in particular is masterful at connecting clinical theory to everyday application, and does so in prose that is both concrete and clear. She manages to seamlessly blend tough-minded seriousness with humor and empathy, revealing both extensive experience with and a natural feel for her subject. Do yourself a favor and put Empowering Adolescent Girls, and the accompanying Go Grrrls Workbook, at the top of your summer reading list!

An excellent tool for working with adolescent girls.I just finished reading empowering adolescent girls and I am going to start over at the beginning. This book contains a wealth of information. It is encyclopedic in scope, but offers specific strategies for working with real girls. The curriculum that is included in the book is really helpful as it lays out exactly how to conduct a group meeting. It even has evaluation tools and a companion parent curriculum to use. It's like getting three books in one. The workbook is a perfect tool to use with girls. It incorporates fun and informative activities in an interactive format that I know my clients will love. I'll be using this as a reference for years to come, and expect to order several more workbooks for clients to use.

Fixin' to Git: One Fan's Love Affair With Nascar's Winston Cup
Published in Hardcover by Duke Univ Pr (Trd) (September, 2002)
Average review score:

Absolutely fascinating!Whether you're a stock car fan or not, this is fascinating and hilarious. What a sport, what a history, what a culture. NASCAR is something different. Couldn't possibly have learned or enjoyed more.
Review by a non-NASCAR readerI had no knowledge or affinity towards NASCAR racing before reading this book. The author makes the subject interesting to those of us who don't know the drivers, the car racing teams, the tracks or anything else about NASCAR. It is a funny and at times hilarious read of one man's love with racing and the Winston Cup. While not at all "high browed", one begins to understand the sociological context of this fast growing sport. I recommend this book the fan, nonfan and the curious.
A GREAT book for any NASCAR race-fan!This book was a nice change from the typical "behind the scenes" books you usually find about Nascar. The author tells it like it is from a fan's point of view. He describes his trips to several different NASCAR events. His stories are amusing, and entertaining, and his information is accurate. I used this book to show a friend of mine why I go to so many races and why I am such a big NASCAR fan. Next thing you know, she was begging me to take her to Rockingham,NC. She's a NASCAR fan now too, so I guess that says something for the book. I highly recommend it to any true NASCAR fan or anyone who doesn't understand why NASCAR is America's fastest growing sport. Read "Fixin' to git" and just maybe you'll become a fan too......

Life on a Horse FarmA truly wonderful gift for any child interested in animals and how they live! I gave it to my grandchildren and only wish I would have had something similar for my children!
This is a great book!LIFE ON A HORSE FARM is one of the most illustrative and interesting books on the market for young children. It features a family who takes care of and trains horses for the race track. Some interesting highlights of this book are
1. An illustrative look at the parts of the horse
2. A step by step look at the birth of a foal
3. Communication between horses
4. Health concerns when dealing with horses
5. Chores to be done in the barn
6. Special training for racehorses headed to the track

AND MUCH MORE!
I definetly reccomend this book. It is the best, most informative horse farm book on the market. Also be sure to check out other "Life on the Farm" books by Judy Wolfman.
Great for horse loversKids who have never been near a horse will find this book of great interest. The photos and story go well together, as Sarah Mills (the girl who lives on the horse farm) tells about her life on the horse farm. These horses are bred for racing - lots of new material here. Any child will love it. (Adults too!)

Winston and Clementine : The Personal Letters of the Churchills
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (March, 1999)
Average review score:

Facinating look into the private life of a great statesmanThe real service that this book performs is to remind the reader that great historical figures are not one dimensional. Chuchill was a renaissance man, warrior, journalist, historian, memoirist, politician and statesman. He was arguably the single greatest personage of this century and his name has become a symbol for the indominitable spirit of a free people. The collection of letters sent to and received from his wife are entertaining as well as educational. They provide a feel for the time in which they were written and place many of Churchill's famous accomplishments (and failures) in proper context. Amazingly, unlike today when the more we know of a public figure, the smaller they seem, in Churchill's case one comes away convinced that this was a great man in the truest sense, and that much of his greatness is due in no small part to his marriage to Clementine.
Lesson of Life Behind an Extraordinary PartnershipWhen I considered buying that book, I first felt quite uncomfortable about the idea of reading an exchange of private letters between Winston and Clementine. Fortunately, I overcame my discomfort fast. I quickly enjoyed reading that thick epistolary volume about their political and personal matters. The personal letters of the Churchills revealed to me how influential Clementine was on Winston across the board. Their deep love and trust was the secret of their successful marriage, even if Winston was not always an easy husband and politician to deal with. Corresponding by written messages (today perhaps by email) with each other on a regular basis, even when they were together, proved to be an excellent way to help them keep their enduring flame for each other intact. Today, too many marital and extra-marital relationships get dissolved prematurely because of a lack of enough communication between both players. Life is after all a comedy in which men and women play their part and need to know or rediscover how to communicate their joys and pains to one another in order to increase the odds that they will be successful in their relationship.
An intimate insightThis book was introduced to me through a friend and, quite frankly, my first reaction was to cringe at the idea of reading such a bulky historical book. But from the first letter I was transfixed by the dialogue between husband and wife on both political and personal matters. This book brings with it a new aspect of Churchill's personality - he was not only a great statesman but he was a passionate man who loved his wife dearly which is seen clearly in the letters that were intended for her eyes only.
I often wonder how he would have felt to know millions would one day read the letters he wrote to his "clemmie-cat". In any case, its a great read :)
Cheers, Meagan.
